Whirlpool Faces Class Suit Over Washer Energy Ratings

Whirlpool Corp. must face class claims by New York consumers alleging they overpaid for three models of washing machine improperly labeled as “Energy Star” compliant.

Walt Famular alleged he and others paid a premium for Whirlpool’s Maytag “Centennial” line of washing machines and experienced higher-than-expected utility bills because the appliances didn’t meet Energy Star standards.

Common issues of liability and damages dominate in claims based on violations of New York’s consumer protection laws and claims alleging Whirlpool was unjustly enriched, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York said.
