Whirlpool Exits Suit Over Maytag Washer Energy Star Ratings

Whirlpool Corp. beat a proposed class suit challenging energy star ratings on Maytag washing machines, the District of New Jersey said Dec. 5.

Lowe’s Home Centers, Home Depot Inc., and other retailers also won judgment on individual plaintiffs’ claims.

The appliances were compliant with the federal energy efficiency regulations at the time the plaintiffs bought them, the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey said in granting summary judgment for the defendants.

The Department of Energy’s Energy Star program authorizes manufacturers to affix an Energy Star label to appliances that meet certain standards of efficiency.
