Walmart, CVS, Perrigo Suit Alleges Carcinogen in Generic Zantac

Drugmaker Perrigo Co. PLC and retailers CVS Health Co. and Walmart Stores Inc. deceptively marketed generic Zantac antacid products as safe when they contained a cancer-causing substance, a new proposed class suit alleges.

Zantac is chemically known as ranitidine.

Perrigo manufactured the over-the-counter ranitidine product, which CVS and Walmart sold under the brands CVS Health Acid Reducer (CHAR) and Equate, respectively, the suit alleges.

The products were worthless because they contained undisclosed dangerously high levels of NDMA, a probable human carcinogen, Stacey Koppell and Dan Zhovtis allege.
