USDA Pig Slaughter Rule Threatens Food, Environment, Groups Say

The Agriculture Department’s new swine slaughter rule poses a serious risk to animal welfare, food safety, and the environment, a coalition of animal rights groups alleged in a complaint filed in the Western District of New York.

The “Modernization of Swine Slaughter Inspection” rule, finalized in October 2019, is designed to deregulate the industry by eliminating slaughter line speed limits and reducing federal oversight.

The changes will result in less humane treatment of pigs as an increased number are slaughtered with fewer federal inspectors on the slaughter line, the groups allege.
