U.S. Meat Recalls Are on the Rise, Study Shows

The most hazardous meat and poultry recalls climbed slightly in 2019 from the year earlier, with the number up 85% since 2013, a study released Tuesday from the U.S. PIRG Education Fund shows.

  • Total meat and poultry recalls overseen by the Food and Drug Administration are up 65% since 2013, the independent researcher wrote in the analysis
  • 15.5 million pounds of meat and poultry were recalled for containing metal, plastic or other extraneous material in 2019
