TransUnion LLC got $20 million in punitive damages knocked off of a $60 million jury award for placing terrorist alerts on consumer credit reports and sending confusing information on how to get them removed, after the Ninth Circuit found the award excessive.
The initial award of $52 million in punitive damages in addition to $8 million in statutory damages was too high under the circumstances, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said Thursday.
