‘Sustainable’ Seafood Suits Filed Against Bumble Bee, Conagra

Bumble Bee Foods LLC and Conagra Brands Inc. were hit with separate proposed class actions alleging they dupe consumers with false promises that their seafood products are “sustainable.”

The suits are part of a growing litigation trend that targets company statements about recyclability, sustainability, or other environmentally conscious attributes.

Abdallah Nasser, John Bohen, and Marissa Sanchez sued Bumble Bee in the US District Court for the Central District of California on Thursday, saying it charges a premium for packaged tuna and salmon with a “certified sustainable seafood” certification from the Marine Stewardship Council.
