Senate Committee Approves Bill To Protect Privacy of Car Data

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation March 25 unanimously approved a measure (S. 766) to protect driver privacy.

The bipartisan Driver Privacy Act would make the owner of a vehicle the owner of any information collected by an event data recorder (EDR), according to a March 25 joint statement by Sens. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who introduced the measure March 17. EDRs can continuously collect at least 43 pieces of information about a vehicle’s operation, such as direction, speed and seat-belt usage, according to the statement.
