Perrigo Joins Ranks of Drug Companies Recalling Generic Zantac

Perrigo Co. joined its peers and pulled its generic version of the heartburn drug Zantac off store shelves worldwide because it may be contaminated with a cancer-causing chemical.

The voluntary recall comes after the Dublin-based drugmaker began testing the active pharmaceutical ingredient in its products, known as ranitidine, following warnings from regulators last month that the compound may contain the chemical N-nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA. The company halted shipments of its products on Oct. 8 after it got preliminary test results.
