Peanut Corp. Chief Gets 28 Years for Salmonella Outbreak

The former chief executive officer of the now-defunct Peanut Corp. of America was sentenced Sept. 21 to 28 years in prison for his role in shipping salmonella-tainted products linked to nine deaths in 2009 (United States v. Parnell, M.D. Ga., 13-cr-00012, sentencing).

Stewart Parnell, 61, was found guilty in September of conspiracy, wire fraud, obstruction of justice and misbranding.

The jury also found Parnell’s brother, Michael, who was a food broker, guilty of similar charges. Mary Wilkerson, PCA’s quality assurance manager, was found guilty of one count of obstruction.
