Oklahoma City Reaches $54 Million Settlement Over Zinc Contamination

AUSTIN, Texas—The city of Blackwell, Okla., Feb. 5 settled a state court suit over contamination from decades of zinc mining for $54 million (Blackwell v. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc.).

The agreement with Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc., successor to Blackwell Zinc Co., provides compensation for soil and ground water contaminated by zinc mining operations between 1916 and 1974. Contaminants in the area include lead, zinc, cadmium, and arsenic.

The $54 million settles the city’s claims related to the zinc mining operation, and will allow the city to conduct cleanup operations as well as fund other activities.
