NHL Settles Suit Alleging Brain Injury Prompted Player’s Suicide

The National Hockey League has reached a settlement with the widow of Todd Ewen, whose 2015 suicide she attributes to long-term brain injuries he incurred while playing in the league, the Central District of California said Tuesday.

Magistrate Judge Gail J. Standish issued an order taking the case off the motions calendar after the court was advised by counsel of the settlement of the matter, the terms of which are undisclosed.

The complaint, filed in April 2019, alleges the league’s promotion of violence and concealment of long-term brain injuries associated with the sport led to Ewen’s death.
