Massachusetts Electric Co. should be held liable for contaminating Gloucester Bay with coal tar, the United States said Friday in a federal complaint.
The utilities company, doing business as National Grid, owns and operates the former Gloucester Gas Light Company manufactured gas plant, which released toxins like coal tar and associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the lawsuit said.
The US said the releases entered the Gloucester Harbor, and directly impacted soil, groundwater, sediments, and surface water.
