Insurer Sues Aurobindo, Avet, Alleging Metformin Has Carcinogen

Aurobindo USA Inc. and Heritage Pharmaceuticals LLC produced generic metformin diabetes medication that was worthless because it was tainted with the carcinogen NMDA, a health insurer alleges in a proposed class suit in a Florida federal court.

Metformin is the most-prescribed oral drug for patients with type 2 diabetes, especially overweight patients, MSP Recovery Claims Series LLC says in the suit filed April 3 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

In early March, the online pharmacy Valisure notified the Food and Drug Administration it had detected NDMA contamination in metformin made by Aurobindo and Heritage, ...
