Honda Hit With $1.4 Million Verdict in Engine-Rattle Class Trial

American Honda Motor Co. was ordered to pay $1.4 million to a class of Illinois drivers who alleged a flawed part causes engine rattle in some vehicles, but a federal jury in California cleared the automaker on similar claims by drivers in that state.

Honda and the plaintiffs had previously stipulated that the Illinois drivers would be entitled to $544 each in damages, should the jury find in their favor.

The Monday verdict in the US District Court for the Northern District of California followed a rare class trial—cases more typically settle after a class is certified.
