GE Gets Initial OK to Settle Class Suit Over Microwave Doors

A nationwide class settlement over General Electric Co. microwave ovens with glass doors that can allegedly shatter got preliminary approval from a federal court in Connecticut Wednesday.

The deal, which offers $300 to class members whose microwave doors have already shattered and $5 to other microwave owners, appears fair, reasonable, and adequate, according to the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut.

The settlement covers only consumer claims for the loss of the ovens or their diminished value, according to the consumers’ request for settlement approval. Claims for injuries are specifically excluded, they said.
