“Evaporated cane juice” or “dried cane syrup” should be called “sugar” on food labels, the Food and Drug Administration said May 26 in a guidance.
The term “evaporated cane juice” gave rise to a slew of suits by consumers alleging it’s deceptive wording that hides the presence of sweeteners, making foods appear healthier than they are.
The phrase “evaporated cane juice” is false or misleading because it suggests that the sweetener is “juice” or is made from “juice.” It doesn’t reveal that its basic nature and characterizing properties are those of a sugar, the FDA said in a final guidance. ...
