Cruise Ship Doctor Dodges Claims Over Passenger’s Death

A ship’s doctor for Oceana Cruises Inc. can’t be hauled into court to answer claims that his negligence contributed to the death of a passenger, the Southern District of Florida ruled June 1 (Ure v. Oceania Cruises, Inc., 2017 BL 184653, S.D. Fla., No. 14-cv-21340, 6/1/17).

The ruling is the latest in litigation brought by Thomas Ure over the alleged negligence of Oceana and Fabian Bonilla, an Ecuadorian physician who allegedly mistreated Ure’s wife for a onboard gastrointestinal illness in 2013, and then sent her to a Barbados hospital ill-equipped to treat her worsening condition.
