CPSC Staff Wants Voluntary Standard Plus One: Coverage of ‘2D’ Strollers

Staff recommended April 24 that Consumer Product Safety Commissioners issue a proposed federal safety standard for strollers and carriages that incorporates the latest voluntary standard but adds an additional requirement to address what are called “2D strollers.”

Strollers that fold in two dimensions—height and length—are 2D strollers, while those that fold in three dimensions—height, length, and width—are called “3D strollers.”

The most recent voluntary standard, published by ASTM International April 16, addresses hinge-related hazards posed by 3D strollers but not 2D strollers, CPSC staff told the three commissioners at the April 24 briefing.
