The word “natural” on food labels has sparked hundreds of suits from consumers alleging they were duped into paying a premium for foods containing ingredients they say aren’t natural.
Currently there’s no formal Food and Drug Administration definition for the term, but there’s a lot of interest.
The FDA’s November 2015 call for comment on whether and how it should define the term drew more than 7,500 responses. The FDA also posed some specific questions, including whether “natural” may be used to describe genetically modified foods43 PSLR 1316, 11/16/15, 16 CLASS 1305, 11/27/15, See previous story, 11/12/15.
