CITGO Must Pay Awards to Injured Toxic Spill Cleanup Workers

CITGO Petroleum Corp. must pay personal injury awards in favor of workers hired to clean up after two “tremendous releases” from the company’s Calcasieu Parish Refinery, after a Louisiana appeals court found sufficient evidence supporting the awards.

The workers alleged they were exposed to benzene and other volatile organic chemicals while doing remediation work after a 2006 flash flood triggered the release of four million gallons of slop oil and 17 million gallons of wastewater into the Calcasieu River.

The workers alleged they sustained injuries while employed by several companies CITGO retained to conduct the cleanup.
