Chrysler ‘Knew’ of Jeep Fuel Tank Fire Risk, Crash Suit Claims

The design of a 2004 Jeep Liberty SUV’s fuel system was defective and led to an Ohio woman’s death in a fire following a rear-end collision, her widower alleges in a suit against the automaker.

Then Chrysler and now FCA US LLC, the company “has known for decades” that mounting a gas tank behind the rear axle makes it vulnerable in rear impacts, Daniel B. Gilreath said July 16 in the Butler County Court of Common Pleas.

Two of Gilreath’s attorneys obtained a $150 million jury verdict, reduced to $40 million, in a similar case in Georgia.
