Brew Dr. Kombucha LLC deceptively touted its popular fermented tea beverages as having a significantly higher amount of probiotic bacteria than the products sold actually contained, a new lawsuit in Oregon federal court alleges.
Kombucha is often advertised and promoted as having a variety of health benefits, including most commonly that it contains various beneficial probiotic bacteria, the suit says.
The scientific method for determining the amount of probiotic bacteria involves counting the number of “Colony Forming Units”–-the number of bacterial colonies that grow from a given sample of the product, according to the complaint.
