In the first two weeks of August alone, Masayoshi Son has added $11 billion to his fortune as SoftBank Group Corp.’s artificial intelligence bets sent its shares to record highs. That’s put Son’s wealth firmly back on the upswing after years of turbulence.

Son’s net worth now stands at $33.3 billion, making him the second richest person in Japan after Fast Retailing Co.’s Tadashi Yanai, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The SoftBank founder and largest shareholder of the Tokyo-listed firm controls a global portfolio of tech investments, from chipmakers to startup ventures.
