Zillow Owes Photo Studio $1.9 Million Award, 9th Cir. Affirms

Zillow Inc. should pay a large real estate photography studio $1.9 million for infringing thousands of images, the Ninth Circuit said in its second opinion on the case.

VHT Inc. and Zillow both failed to convince the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to alter the award of a Washington federal court in their cross-appeals. The district court rightly excused VHT for not registering its copyrights before suing, found the photos didn’t constitute a compilation eligible for only a single award and held trial to determine damages, the Ninth Circuit said.
