Weather Channel App, IBM Settle L.A. Location Data Lawsuit (1)

The Weather Channel mobile phone app and its parent company, IBM Corp., have agreed to settle a lawsuit brought by Los Angeles city officials alleging they mined sensitive data on the location of app users without their consent.

Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer filed suit against IBM and app operator TWC Product and Technology LLC in 2019, saying they used geolocation tracking technology to collect data while misleading consumers about its use. The app was able “to monitor where users live, work, and visit, twenty-four hours a day,” Feuer told reporters at the time.
