Virginia Joins Oregon, Maryland With Geolocation Data Sale Ban

Virginia is the third state to prohibit the sale of precise geolocation information, joining a trend of states seeking to restrict companies’ use of the data.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger on Monday approved an amendment to the state privacy statute, the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act, to prohibit sales of the data starting in July.

• Maryland was the first to ban sales of precise geolocation information when its law when into effect last year. It was quickly followed by a similar ban in Oregon that went into effect in January.
