Virginia City Sued Over ‘Unconstitutional’ License Plate Readers

Norfolk, Virginia, and its police department are violating the Fourth Amendment by tracking individuals’ movements with AI-assisted license plate readers, according to a new lawsuit.

Software used by Norfolk, provided by Flock Safety Inc., automates the license plate reading and search process using advanced search and artificial intelligence functions, turning work that would have taken days and significant resources into just a few clicks, according to the complaint filed Monday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Virginia residents Lee Schmidt and Crystal Arrington asked the court to block Norfolk from using the technology for good. ...
