U. of California Wins Partial Dismissal of Pixel Privacy Case

The governing board for the University of California system must face allegations it violated students’ privacy by installing an ad-tracking pixel on a health portal, a California federal judge ruled Monday.

Judge William Orrick of the US District Court for the Northern District of California allowed allegations that the Regents of the University of California violated common law privacy and the Confidentiality of Medical Information Act to advance. The board, which oversees the largest academic health system in the US, escaped other claims alleging violations of the California Invasion of Privacy Act, California constitution, and an implied contract.
