Turkey Privacy Watchdog Starts Probe Into TikTok, Anadolu Says

July 2, 2020, 1:05 PM UTC

Turkey’s Personal Data Protection Authority launched an investigation into the security of online video sharing service TikTok, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on Thursday.

The watchdog, known as KVKK, was recently notified of a vulnerability in personal data protection on the app, owned by China’s ByteDance Ltd., Anadolu said.

India banned TikTok last month, saying the platform threatens national security and sovereignty, as well as citizens’ privacy.

KVKK fined social media giant Facebook 1.65 million liras ($241,000) in October over a bug that it said may have given some applications access to user photos.
