Trademark Lawyer Wins $1 Million in Unum Disability Pay Lawsuit

A Minneapolis trademark lawyer with breast cancer won more than $1 million in disability benefits, interest, attorneys’ fees, and costs in her lawsuit against Unum Life Insurance Co. of America.

Judge John R. Tunheim on Thursday awarded the lawyer $663,234 in retroactive benefits for the period between September 2020 and July 2024, along with $77,851 in interest—amounts the parties agreed were appropriate. The judge also awarded her about $317,000 in attorneys’ fees and costs, a reduction from her request for more than $450,000 to account for one lawyer’s “slightly elevated” hourly rate and time spent on unsuccessful motions.
