ByteDance Ltd’s TikTok allegedly collected children’s face scans without permission in violation of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, according to a California federal lawsuit.
The popular social media app didn’t inform its minor users that TikTok would store, capture, or use their face scans, guardians alleged on behalf of two minor users of the platform. The minors were TikTok users who had posted “many videos” that include images of their faces, the plaintiffs alleged in the suit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
