An emerging mix of more than a dozen state laws designed to protect the privacy and safety of kids over 13 has left companies confused over how to stay in compliance and how much it will cost.

For more than two decades, the 1998 Childrens’ Online Privacy Protection Act in the US— which protects children 13 and under—and more recently the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, served as a north star for companies setting standards for kids privacy.
