Final South African privacy regulations, expected to open the way for long-awaited implementation of the country’s privacy statue, are expected to be finalized in April 2018, the regulator said in a briefing paper released Sept. 20.
After the rules are finalized, the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) won’t be enforced until after a 12-month grace period intended to allow companies time to adapt to its new privacy and data security requirements, such as fines of up to 10 million rand ($765,405) and up to 10 years’ imprisonment of company leaders for violations.
