Shopify Inc. dodged privacy claims brought by an online shopper who alleged that the e-commerce platform collected his sensitive private information without his consent in violation of California law, after a federal judge threw out the proposed class action.
Brandon Briskin claimed that Shopify violated the California Invasion of Privacy Act and other state laws when it stored consumer data and installed cookies on users’ browsers to track shopper transactions across the company’s merchant network. Consumers’ full names, addresses, email addresses, credit card numbers, IP addresses, items purchased, and geolocations were stored, Briskin says.
