Senators Warn Against Trusting TikTok Pledge to Protect US Data

Two US senators urged a key national security panel to “impose strict structural restrictions between TikTok’s American operations and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, including potentially separating the companies,” according to a letter sent Thursday.

Connecticut Democrat Richard Blumenthal and Kansas Republican Jerry Moran wrote to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in her capacity as chair of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US. That panel, known as Cfius, is reviewing security arrangements that representatives from video-sharing app TikTok say will protect US users from the influence of Beijing-based ByteDance Ltd.
