‘Right to Repair’ Massachusetts Ballot Item Sees Legal Challenge

A trade group representing Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co., and other automotive heavyweights sued Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey in a bid to block a ballot initiative that would expand consumer and repair shop access to vehicle data.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation alleged the measure, approved by Massachusetts voters earlier this month, is unenforceable because it is preempted by several federal laws, including the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, according to the lawsuit filed Nov. 20 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
