Privacy Law Passage Still in Key Democrat’s Sights for This Year

The chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee believes a federal privacy law can be enacted before the end of the year, despite major hurdles.

Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) and panel ranking member Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) broke years of deadlock with committee approval of the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (H.R. 8152) in July. But opposition from key lawmakers and a narrowing legislative window make the bill’s path to passage uncertain.
