PetSmart LLC will pay more than $424,000 to settle a proposed class action alleging it collected workers’ voiceprints in violation of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act.
Steven Stegmann sued PetSmart, claiming that it required warehouse workers to use voice-recognition technology without obtaining their written consent for the collection of their voiceprints as required under BIPA.
The company also failed to inform them of the purpose for the data collection or the length of time it would retain their information, or publish a policy disclosing its guidelines for destroying biometric information, he alleged.
