Petco Settles Illinois Case Alleging BIPA Voiceprint Violations

Petco Animal Supplies Stores Inc. preliminarily settled an Illinois privacy lawsuit that alleged it illegally collected workers’ voiceprints through the use of Honeywell International Inc. technology.

The pet supply store chain will pay $445,000—$1,000 per class member—to resolve the claims. US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois Judge Sunil Harjani on Thursday ruled the proposed settlement reached between a putative class and Petco “is fair, reasonable, and adequate” and preliminarily approved the deal.
