Oakland, Calif., would be prohibited from contracting with businesses that help the federal government collect data and detain immigrants under a proposed law that’s state counterpart is on hold.
Oakland would join two other San Francisco Bay Area cities in barring business with any organization identified as providing data broker, extreme vetting, or detention facilities support to any federal immigration agency unless no reasonable alternative exists. The City Council unanimously passed the proposed ordinance May 22.
