NYC Public Hospitals Sued Over Hack Affecting 1.8 Million People

A former patient sued New York City Health and Hospitals Corp. for allegedly failing to protect personal health information of at least 1.8 million people from a data breach that lasted more than a month.

Deneice O’Connor filed the proposed class action Tuesday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. She alleged the public-health system breached its duties to implement reasonable and adequate data-security measures and provide timely notice of the breach under common law, contract law, industry standards, the Federal Trade Commission Act, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
