NY Senate Panel Moves Data Privacy Bill Closer to Floor Vote

A New York Senate panel on Tuesday advanced legislation (S365B) that would impose rules on how businesses collect, buy, and sell consumer data, joining a rush of other states passing similar measures.

The Senate Consumer Protection Committee approved the bill, the New York Privacy Act, and referred it to another committee, which is also expected to pass the bill and send it to the full chamber.

“The state has to step up,” said Kevin Thomas (D), the chairman of the committee. The measure is on track to pass the chamber this year.
