New York state sued Allstate and its National General unit on Monday, accusing the insurance provider of failing to report 2020 and 2021 data breaches affecting nearly 200,000 consumers.
The data breaches occurred between August and November 2020 and in January 2021 and exposed driver’s license numbers of more than 165,000 New Yorkers, according to the complaint filed by state Attorney General Letitia James in New York Supreme Court in Manhattan.
The complaint accuses the company of violating the New York Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security Act. The penalty for breaking the law is $5,000 per violation.
