New York Adds ‘Robo Calls’ to No-Call Law

Aug. 23, 2010, 4:00 AM UTC

ALBANY, N.Y.—New York Gov. David A. Paterson (D) Aug. 13 signed a bill (A. 8839) to expand the state’s telemarketing do-not-call law to include so-called “robo calls” made using autodialers and prerecorded commercial solicitations.

The bill, which takes effect 120 days after it was signed, also grants the state Consumer Protection Board subpoena power to investigate violations of the law. “This law adds teeth to the existing law,’’ Paterson said in an Aug. 15 statement.

A. 8839, as signed into law, is available at http://op.bna.com/pl.nsf/r?Open=dapn-88fr9a.
