New Jersey Latest State to Enact Consumer Privacy Protections

New Jersey residents will gain new rights over how companies collect and use their personal information through a law signed Tuesday by Gov. Phil Murphy (D) that was supported by consumer advocates.

The law to limit the sale of consumer data will apply to companies that do business in the state and touch the personal data of at least 100,000 consumers per year, or at least 25,000 consumers if they also sell personal data. The law, which will take effect in 2025, will give individuals the right to opt-out of certain uses of their data, including for targeted advertising.
