McMenamins Must Face Suit Over Breach of Employee Data

Brewery and hotel chain McMenamins must face a lawsuit over a ransomware attack that compromised the personal information of thousands of its current and former employees, after a federal judge in Washington state ruled that the plaintiffs have standing.

Andrew Leonard and his co-plaintiffs sued the Pacific Northwest chain, claiming that it was negligent in securing its computer systems, allowing hackers to install malicious software and steal the company’s human resources and payroll data files. Names, contact information, medical notes, Social Security numbers, and health insurance information was compromised as a result of the breach, Leonard said.
