A new law in Massachusetts that expands consumer and auto repair shop access to wireless diagnostic and repair information could potentially open data up to breaches and the prospect of privacy litigation, attorneys say.
The measure, approved by voters Tuesday, requires manufacturers that sell vehicles with telematics systems in Massachusetts to equip them with an open data platform beginning with model year 2022 cars. Repair facilities—and not just dealers—can access mechanical data from those systems and run diagnostics with a mobile application.
