Pressure from the private sector has forced local governments to step in on the issue of facial recognition as they wait for the federal government to act on regulating the technology’s use.

Amazon.com Inc.‘s open-ended extension this week of a pause on police use of its facial recognition software was meant to give lawmakers time to regulate facial recognition. Lawmakers at the city and state level are moving to restrict the technology, even as federal proposals stall in Congress.
