Law Firm Sued Over Hack That Exposed Clients’ Sensitive Data

Law firm Riley Pope & Laney LLC failed to protect the sensitive data of more than 7,000 individuals who didn’t do business with the firm and never consented to it storing their data, according to a federal class action.

By failing to disclose the August 2024 data breach in a timely manner the firm violated the South Carolina Data Breach Security Act, according to the complaint filed Feb. 24 in the US District Court for the District of South Carolina.
